Great Leaders Lead Themselves Well
When we focus on our strengths and our blindspots and hone our key human skills (communication, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, negotiation, etc.), we become more impactful.
Read on to reflect alongside Melissa about how you can best set yourself up for success as a leader.
Reflecting on the First Half
How has your first half gone? Probably like many of you, I've had some highs and some lows, sometimes feeling like I'm on a roller coaster stuck when I'm hanging upside down!
It's so important to ensure we are checking in with ourselves on a regular basis, weekly, monthly, and quarterly so we can assess how things are going.
Are you trying to fit in a box?
We always have a choice if we want to operate in the box and color inside the lines or if we want to get rid of the box and color the way we think looks beautiful. It’s our choice.
We can start with the blank piece of paper and decide if there is even a box or lines to color within.
We need community
⭐️ We thrive when we're in community with others.
⭐️We thrive when we feel like we have something to share that may be valuable for someone else.
⭐️We thrive when we feel like we're in a safe space to share our experiences.
Graduation Milestones
Today is a day to celebrate! My daughter is graduating from high school and moving on to the next chapter in her life. While I am so excited for her, it signals a shift in my role as a parent.
Why don’t we celebrate more?
What if we started celebrating all the steps in the journey vs. waiting for the destination?
I think we would be happier. I think it would make doing the hard work easier because some celebrations are embedded.
Letting Go
As the years pass, I've realized we benefit more when we let go or at least hold things more loosely. One of my very first blog posts was about holding on tight and the challenges that brings.
But today is all about letting go because it allows us and the people around us to grow. When we let go or loosen the reins, it's initially scary because we feel like we're losing control, but then it's exhilarating because there's a feeling of freedom and joy.
So what is worth letting go of? Here are some of the items on my list, and I'd love to hear any you'd like to share.
I would tell my younger self…
In two different situations this week, people were sharing what they would tell their younger self so it got me thinking about what I would tell my 23-year-old self. Here are 5 things that I would tell my early career self:
Are you working at the top of your license?
What does working at the top of our license mean if we're not in a licensed profession?
🎯It means we need to assess ourselves, our skills, and the value we offer an organization when we focus on those things.
🎯It means that we're spending the bulk of our work efforts doing the work we are more uniquely qualified to do.
🎯It means that we're looking at ways to eliminate, reduce, automate, reduce, or delegate the work activities that are not using those higher-valued skills that add the most significant impact to the organization.
Why I believe in coaching
I thought it’s time to share why I believe in the value of coaching and investing in a coach.
Yes, I have a vested interest since it’s part of the portfolio of work I do, but it’s more than that. It’s about the value I’ve gotten from hiring different types of coaches over the past 10 years or so.
I didn’t always believe in what coaching could do outside of a health, sports, and fitness area.
