Do you know what you're looking for?
When I talk to people about what's not working for them - in their life, their career, their business, they often are clear about what they think the problem is. They want more, better, different, and they're clear on what that might look like. Assuming we end up working together, we usually find that there's also another underlying challenge they want and need to work through. It's part of the full exploration of how we best lead ourselves to where we want to go and who we want to be.
Sometimes though, the conversations are more vague. The individual knows they're looking for something, but they're not sure what. I had one of those conversations recently. As I thought more about what was going on with the individual, it reminded me of a discussion I had several years ago about my career…about feeling like there was always a pebble in my shoe. I went back and found the original blog post on this topic in case you want to check it out.
When we're searching for something, and we don't know what it is, it can feel frustrating. We just know that something is missing or it's not quite right. Often we start chasing different ways to fix what's missing. The hard part is that, because we don't know what's missing, we may be searching in the wrong places. My role as a coach is to help you zoom out from the day-to-day view so that you can see the bigger picture of your life and your career and figure out the best path to the destination you're focused on.
Do you know where you want to go or are you still searching?
