Do You Have Competing Priorities?

Earlier this week In the group coaching session I’m part of, I was sharing that I hadn’t made progress on the items that I took last week.  I knew there were a lot of competing priorities coming - a training session, move prep, speaking at a conference, closing, moving, and unpacking.  Adding something new might not happen but I was optimistic that I would have knocked it out last week because it was just about writing an email and reaching out to ~10 people.

But it didn’t happen. The good news though was that I have a nice virtual sticky note on my desktop that was there to remind me how I wanted to do it, and I committed to doing it this week.  The value of group coaching is that it’s about accountability and what’s getting in the way and not about guilt.

This has definitely been a week of juggling the move and getting client work in.  I’m working on giving myself grace for the things I haven’t done this week (no running or strength work yet….though moving out of a 3rd floor condo with no elevator probably counts for something).  The picture for today’s message is of me on Monday giving my new talk at the Delaware SHRM Annual Conference - “Endurance Leadership When There Is No Finish Line - Sustainable High Performance for You and Your Team:  What Marathon Training Can Teach Us.”  I was pleased with the level of engagement and comments after so if this is a topic you think your organization or community group would be interested in, let me know.

What I also realized yesterday is something that I talk to my clients about all of the time…priorities.  In general, we get done what we really want and need to get done.  But, we have to be realistic on what our minds and bodies can take on in a day.  I made choices that on one hand might seem lazy, but on the other hand, are a strategy to make each day doable... sleeping in a few extra minutes, watching the Lincoln Lawyer after a day of moving instead of reading and responding to email, and not pushing the workouts knowing I can get back on track this weekend as we settle into a new routine that includes unpacking boxes but not moving homes.

Though I may feel behind, the bar of what is on time, ahead of time, or behind is mostly in my head, not true deadlines.

If you’re feeling behind as you head into the weekend, think again.

🤔 Are you really behind or just have a lot of things to tackle?

🤔 How clear are you on your top 3 priorities for the week or the month?

🤔 What boundaries do you need to put in place for the coming week to make sure you can focus on those top priorities?

If you’re feeling stuck in these areas, a series of laser coaching sessions (4-6 30-minute sessions) may be useful to get you back on the path to growth and impact.

Have a great weekend!  I’ll be prioritizing my 10-mile training run, getting out to enjoy some of the Seawitch Festival, and unpacking more boxes.
